At
the heart of the Mandal's activities is the Pramukhswami Medical College.
The first batch of 100 students was admitted in 1987. Initially founded
as a grant-in-aid institution with Gujarat Government's financial
assistance, the College is now a self-financed institute. As an autonomous
institution the College admits 100 students to its Medical Council
of India recognized MBBS course. The composition of each class includes
Consistent with the Mandal's purpose and philosophy, the curriculum
focuses on the medical realities of rural India and attempts to
inculcate the values of service to this large and under served population.
The College program includes opportunities for student participation
in a variety of community-based programs. The students, along with
interns, run a Medicine Bank to serve indigent patients. Students
collect free samples from doctors and collect individual donations
to operate the Medicine Bank, which is open, every day from 9:00
AM to 5:00 PM. Each year the Bank provides poor patients with medicines
worth Rs. 3 lakhs (US$6,250).
The College organizes a variety of seminars/workshops conducted
frequently in addition to regularly held weekly multidisciplinary
academic meetings.
