| Dr.H.M.Patel's vision was a medical complex, centered
in a College to provide the best in medical education, along with
a hospital of the highest standard and a programme designed to reach
out to rural communities, ensuring that the facilities served those
whose needs were greatest. He pursued his task with typical courage,
perseverance and imagination. He began by establishing the Charotar
Arogya Mandal and co-opting the participation of influential members
of the Charotar community, ensuring a high level of local interest
and support. The first steps were the simultaneous establishment of
a nursing school and building of a 135-bed hospital to employ them.
Before the medical college was set up in 1987, the hospital was expanded
and modernized. As a result, the first batch of medical students received
superior clinical education in a 550-bed teaching hospital.
The student body of all the institutions, drawn from Gujarat, elsewhere
in India, and abroad, is selected on the basis of entry-level aptitude
and achievement. Students are taught by a highly qualified and motivated
faculty and enjoy the lowest student-faculty ratio in the state.
Instruction is supported by a fine, computerized library, well-equipped
laboratories and classrooms.
